Finches Egg & Soft Food 101

Seed only diets do not produce healthy birds. Dry seeds do not have the necessary protein and essential vitamins and mineral levels required to successfully breed and raise healthy birds. Pelleted and extruded diets don't offer variety and are often not accepted by birds. Avian breeders have been su...

Re: Zebra finch requirements?

Zebra finches are great birds, zebra finches do best in pairs or groups, finches will do just fine in a slandered budgie cage, as long as there not paired with budgies... Zebra finches eat mostly millet seed, a common finch diet from your local pet store will do great, millet also comes in spays (st...

Re: Why does my Zebra Finch have swollen legs/feet?

Your zebra finch may have arthritis. Sometimes these birds will develop pressure sores on their feet. Zebra finches can develop many of the diseases we do. I would take the zebra finch to an avian vet for a diagnosis and treatment. The avian vet can give you anti-inflammatory medications for the swe...

Re: Why are my finches having breathing problems?

Hi, I answered your last question too. Antibiotics would go into finches water not as injections. What do you disinfect the cages with? Are you changing the liners everyday? do you disinfect all the cage decorations and perches too? Ruffed up feathers is a symptom of a sick bird. give them a heat la...

Re: Gouldian finches health and care?

I would personally never medicate a bird without first seeing or at least talking to a vet unless it was a chronic problem that you and the vet had decided together that you can now recognize on your own.

I know that it is the weekend, but most vets have someone on call at least.

Re: Breeding Finches?

My zebra finches bred constantly. It depends on the finches, of course, but as the previous poster said, it's hard to keep them from doing it. Also, once the female is in the habit of laying eggs, she'll keep doing it, just like a hen, even if the male has been separated from her. If this happens, t...

Re: Can i house Gouldian Finches in an Outdoor aviary?

Hi Kathy, I've kept Gouldian Finches with Zebra Finches in an outdoor aviary year round with no problems. (I live in Australia, 30˚C (86˚F) in summer and as low as 10˚C (50˚F) or less in winter) A lot of finch species are sensitive to low temperatures. Wild Gouldian Finches live in the hottest part ...

Re: Why are gouldian finches so expensive?

Hey Kylie, The Gouldian finch is one of the most expensive and difficult bird to breed and one of the most colorful, most breeders use Society finches as foster parents to hatch an rear young Gouldians, They are in terms a "fragile" bird to breed and demand a quiet spot with little disturbance, for ...
