We have a pair of canaries. The female made a nest and began laying four eggs, they got along fine, and she had been sitting on the eggs for about three weeks now. Two days ago I noticed that she would get out of the nest and start harassing the male We decided to separate the boy into a different cage because she was continually abusing him. Why is she insulting him at this stage and is it ok to have him in a separate cage? They are right next to each other.
The female canary is very dominant. Once the female canary lay eggs, the male is not allowed into the nest. Females have been known to attack and kill a male canary for getting into the nest. It is good to keep them separate until breeding and laying is finished.
