It is true that budgies are parakeets.They are one of the hundreds of bird types that can be categorized as such.All parrots are not parakeets.

Parakeets

Generally birds that can be named as parakeets are those hookbills that have a long tail and they are normally smaller than the large kinds of parrots,such as Macaws,Amazons and Cockatoos.Parakeets are generally very intelligent and easy to train.Most are very good talkers.Some are even more efficient at copying humanspeech than large parrot species.

There are different groups that certain kinds of parakeets can be divided into.Asiatic Parakeets is the one of those groups.This group contain birds named as Indian Ringneck Parakeet,the Moustache Parakeet,the Alexandrine Parakeet and the Plum Headed Parakeet.All these birds originate near India,SriLanka,Indonesia.They are all related species,categorized as Psittacula.

Another group of parakeets is the Grass Parakeets.These birds originate from places in Australia and around Australia.Include species lthey named as Bourk’s Parakeets,the Scarlet Chested or Splendud Parakeets and the Rosellas.Member of the Grass Parakeet group also have similar body structures and traits,a the Asiatic Parakeets do.

There are many different kinds of parakeets that do not fit into these categories.Example of these include the Lineolated Parakeet and the Red Rump Parakeet.Some bird experts also classify Conures as Parakeets.

Common Parakeet Traits

One thing that parakeets of all kinds have in common is their high intelligence and extremely social nature. In fact, their tendency for interaction is what makes them an ideal choice for people who want a pet birds. Parakeets love to bond very strongly to their owners when hand fed as babies and handled often to stay tame. They can be extremely loving and affectionate, preferring to spend the majority of their time with their human flock mates.
